Today’s new page is the third of a series of articles Cook Neilson wrote in Cycle magazine back in the 1970s. Look at the page titled “VQ. Beyond Racer Road 3 – Overdog!” The first two articles are here as well, on pages “VW. Beyond Racer Road 1 – the Toe Gets Dipped,” and “VU. Beyond Racer Road 2 -Learning the Craft,” respectively.
Recently I was invited to an “Ask Me Anything” session on reddit.com’s Ducati sub-reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/Ducati/). I got a few questions and I’m re-publishing the good ones here. Most questions aren’t about Ducatis, so non-Ducati fans might be interested. It’s at the page WI. Ask me Anything.
This week I write about my experiences in club-level endurance road races. In the late 1970s I took part in five endurance races with mixed results. See the page titled “WP. My Endurance Racing Expeience.”
There was no story this week. I started writing one, a good one, and when I got to about 500 words I thought this sounds too familiar. I looked at the early stories and found that I had already done that one. Whoa.
There are now over 60 stories in this blog, in simple chronological order, most recent first. There’s no organization — it’s just a long list. It needed some kind of index, so I made one instead of writing a story. Of course it took much longer than I expected.
I’ve named the index page “An Index” so it will stay at the top of the page list, while the most recently added page will be listed just below it. Each new page will result in a new entry in the index. Hopefully this will help people find stories they’re interested in, and will keep me from putting in a story that’s already there. Take a look at it — the first couple of paragraphs explain how to use it. You may find a good story that you haven’t noticed before.
One: This week’s story is from 1976, the tale of the Garbage Can Special. See the page titled “WY. The Garbage Can Special.”
Two: Dee and I are going to the World Superbike and MotoAmerica races this weekend at Laguna Seca and I will be signing books. Look for us near the gear check on Ducati Island at 2:00 to 3:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. If you’ve already bought my book “Racing the Gods” (https://www.octanepress.com/book/racing-gods) bring it by and I’ll personalize it for you. If you haven’t bought the book yet we will have some for sale. In any case drop by for a chat.
Three: A milestone of sorts, this blog has just passed 20,000 views from nearly 10,000 viewers from dozens of countries. That’s not much compared to some viral blogs, but it’s not bad.
This week’s page is another chapter, perhaps the final chapter, in my series of articles about the history of the AFM. It covers the years 1973-1978, which were good years for the club.
Book News: A reminder that Dee and I will be at the Sacramento Mile on May 30th (next Saturday!), to sell and sign copies of my book “Racing the Gods.” I hope to see some of you there. If you have already bought a copy of the book bring it by and I’ll sign it. There will be books for sale there as well. In addition it looks like there will be some good racing to watch.
It’s Monday so it must be time for a new page in this blog. This week’s story describes ten of the more memorable crashes that span my racing career, from 1973 to 1980. Look for the page titled “YF. Ten Memorable Crashes.”
Book News: We had a good event at the Oregon Vintage Motorcyclists Show last Sunday. The next book signing will be at the Sacramento Mile at the Cal Expo in Sacramento, CA, on May 30th. That’s less than two weeks from now so get your tickets. If you bring by your copy of “Racing the Gods” I will be happy to sign it for you. If you haven’t got one yet we will have some books for sale. Hope to see some of you there.
I don’t have much today, just a set of short stories about suddenly realizing a solution to a problem. Look for the page titled “ZC. Moments of Enlightenment” at the top of the page list.
I’m posting this a day early because I will be traveling to SSMark’s Internment and Celebration of Life tomorrow. You can read about SSMark in the stories Wetleather pt. 2 – the Gather, Wetleather pt. 3B – the BB100 Race, and A Ride in the Desert. Godspeed my friend.
Oct. 29, 2014. I’ve made a couple cosmetic changes to the site and published a new story. Sorry it took so long. Look for the page “Rollin’ and Tumblin’.” The top 10 reasons have real world examples from my own (extensive) experiences with crashing.
Sept. 8, 2014. A little bit of Racing History. I describe seven racetracks from the late 1970s. A few of them still exist but the majority are gone. Click on the 3-line button and look for the link “Tracks I’ve Raced.”
